Bush's incompetence with Katrina pushed him over the edge and turned him away from the dark side.

Who in America isn't part Cherokee because it seems like everybody and their Mama are claiming it these days hell you even have some White Nationalists on Stormfront of all people claiming partial Cherokee ancestry especially in those "Am I White Threads" which they have a shitload of at Stormfront especialy in the opposing views and it usually starts with them claiming "am I White even though I am 1/32 Cherokee but I have blonde hair and blue eyes and extremely pale skin so will you guys still except me even though I am not pure White", I am telling you those types of threads are so predictable they are like broken records.

A lot of people have no idea what their tribal affiliation is but heard they may have some Amerind so they say they are Cherokee. It's like someone thinking they are part European so saying they are "Irish".

Speaking of Irish I bet most Americans who celebrate St.Patrick's day are not even half Irish much less 100% Irish.I know a friend who celebrates St.patrick's Day every year even though he's only a quarter Irish and the rest of his ancestry is made up of German,he's 75% German yet he's never celebrated Oktoberfest in his entire life.Genetically he's more German than Irish yet according to him he feels more culturally Irish than he does German.

Many aren't Irish. Over the years it turn into more than just an Irish Catholic cultural event. In others words, its a good excuse to get drunk!

So far, I have only found one Irish ancestor that I think was actually Irish (b. in the early 1600s). My other "Irish" ancestors likely originated in England or pre-contact America. But if everyone else gets the one drop rule, then I get to have green beer, too;)

Many claim Amerindian heritage b/c they have it. these are indigenous people who for the most part were absored. any time a black or white union occured, chances are there is some Amerindian ancestry on either side.
...but I know what you mean. You are talking about peole who try to claim it when they are less than 1/32. I know it gets out of hand sometimes and ridiculous when you see 99.9% German/Anglo at Pow Wow claiming Lakota Pride.

I think a lot of people some NA ancestry but it seems people claim to be Cherokee when they have some unknown tribal affiliation. Many of the people I know who claim NA ancestry claim to be Cherokee but that seems unlikely... since there are many hundreds of other groups they could belong to (and they typically have not researched it or done anything other than buy a dyed turkey feather to put on their rear view mirror). Also, there are quite a few family legends that turn out to be unlikely (when actual research is done) -- and those always seem to involve Cherokee princesses One day I hope to find out who my NA ancestors were and what specific affiliations they had. Until then I'll just say "I believe I have some NE Amerind ancestors" and not assume that I am a Tsalagi descendant.

^^Interesting thing about Cherokee is that it's actually a combination of at least 100 tribes according to a NAIA member. Iroquois is actually Cherokee now. I didn't know this.
So I guess Cherokee is a "group" of tribes.

So I guess Cherokee is a "group" of tribes. There was definitely intermarriage and kidnappings among the various tribes and when they were moved West a number of smaller groups were consolidated or adopted. For example, the "Cherokee Shawnee" (odd considering how pissed off they were at each other previously). Many of the groups present before European contact are extinct now

Most of the Beaners swimming the Rio Grande to get here look a hell of more Indian than 99% of Americans who go around saying they are part Cherokee. The Mexican lady who parks her taco truck a couple of blocks from me almost everyday looks a hell of alot more Amerindian than James Brown,Chuck Norris,Kim Basinger,Val Kilmer,Tina Turner, etc. Its funny that a short brown skinned Beaner who looks like he or she came straight out of an Aztec Indian tribe won't check the Native American box on the U.S cenus but a blonde haired nd blue eyed pale looking Nordic who looks like he or she came straight out of Sweden will check the Native American box because one of their great great great grandparents was an Indian.

ITA with you. Many Mexican immigrants in my area are more than 80% Aztec or Mayan which means they are Native Americans!!! They instead check off White or Hispanic. If the gov't told them they could do this all hell would break loose. People forget that Texas used to be Mexico so there would be some long years of messy litigation if people decided to push this issue.

Well, technically the classification of NA as far as the US govt goes has to do with past agreements with NA groups in the US, so the genetic aspect has little to do with it. So a Mexican would have to prove acceptance by one of the recognized tribal groups in the US to be able to claim that.

I remember back in the old days Hollywood used to cast dark Italians to play Native Americans.
