I listen to all styles of rock and roll. Lots of new stuff like progressive rock I like, but mostly older stuff from the 60's and 70's. That's where all the good ol' music is. In reality, I like any kind of music as long as it's pleasurable to my ears. The words don't even really matter. It's the music. Melody, harmony, and rhythm mean everything. Because rap is just a beat with words, I find it to be despicable and annoying. Music is supposed to give me pleasure. Not make me want to kill somebody or smack around some bitches.

I m convinced that music taste has to do with DNA.
There are just whites listening to other culture`s music, (black music, indian raga etc) but it s very very rare to see a black listening to metal or classical music, (I ve never seen once yet).
I used to listen to heavy metal , now I just like 60` 70`s 80`s rock like the late beatles , queen, etc, Guitar heroes like steve vai, joe satriani, some italian bands and singers, lots of classical music, especially piano solo or violin quartets, and folk music like tarantella (south italian) russian folk music, and irish (just reels, I dont like the rest). I find most german folk music extremely boring.
While I dont like arab music I find interesting the arab scale played with a grand piano, like some enrique Granados pieces (spanish classical pianist).
Generally I like minor scales, melancholic mood, elegant sound, melodious phrases, sometimes really aggressive sound but never rough (late 80`s metallica for example).
I dont like too happy songs, without melody, lack of polyphony, or 9th , 13th chords ( like jazz).

This is kind of like my thread.
I'm Egyptian and when I was a little kid I loved rap music (early 90s stuff I would see on television), then when I hit puberty I began listening to 80s thrash metal, which I continued to listen to for awhile.
My favorite music ever comes from Burzum, I don't listen alot anymore, but it holds a special place in my heart. His music is for Indo-Europeans, but strangely enough, I find a very close connection with it, despite it's ethnocentrism.
It's quite odd, I contradict my own philosophy when it comes to this topic.
However at the same time, when I hear something that sounds "familiar" (Egyptian), it feels like I am at home, like I should be always listening to it.

Culture definetly plays a part. I hate to sound like "those people," but the pressure on blacks to act "black" is very high. It's just not socially acceptable to embrace white culture if you're black.

I step dance to the bluegrass version of "Danny Boy" accompanied by bagpipes and tom-toms. Seriously, it's still rock'n'roll for me.

well with me, i grew up not hearing much Somali music besides my mom's old collections...basically i was into hip hop alot and acting all thugged out and bad. However whenever I hear music from back home it just touches me in a way no other music can...this is so even when I dont comprehend the lyrics or the language LOL. I guess certain melodies are more pleasing to some ears...like this Beja peasant song sounds really cool to me home.tiscali.nl/~kosc/Ababda%20Music/Ababda%20Music%20Pages/ababda%20music%2002.html

![](http://www.arabicpoems.com/song/foad/songs/7.gif) I like arabic music, in the first place. Especially Omm Kolthom,Amr Diab and Mohamed Fouad. I like very much sha3bee music like Hakeem, Ahmad Adaweya,Riko and sometimes Sha3baan 3abd el Ra7eem. I like also some western classical music, some pop and hip-hop.

Just out of curiosity..are you more into black American culture or native East African culture nowadays? im not into ''black american culture'' and i dont believe hip hop to be solely for blacks...in school alot of whites, indians and even asians (especially Filipinos). Anyways I liked rap because it was cool sounding, not cuz i wanted to emulated African americans. Nowadays I think i outgrew that phase...dont let the awesome freestyles i did fool ya ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Shenuda, no I do not understand Beja...but the tone of the language sounds very similar in my ears...very familiar
