Nationalism and Patriotism haves everything to do with race, for the Race is an extension of the ethnic group and the ethnic group is an extension of the Nation.
It's a matter of continuity.

Doesn't nationalism in a particular area tend to vary over time? Don't economics play a huge role? And what about geography?

Argentina kicked the Spanish out of the country and claimed independence, They resisted the British on two seperate occasions in both 1806 when the british temporarily took Buenos Aires and again the year after. Argentina was'nt forced to join Brazil against paraguay, Argentina aquired large parts of territory from Paraguay as did Brazil from the war. It is true that some Argentines are mestizo (definitely more than is in the census)by and large Argentines are of european descent . Its not just italians and spanish that migrated but germans, eastern europeans and even welsh and irish. President Nestor Kirchner is of swiss descent which is not rare in patagonia. You are right in everything you said, except about Paraguayan war. The Brazilian Navy bombed Buenos Aires and our army took the president out of power, and putted another one who was in favor of Brazilian interests in doing a war against Paraguay (something the original government didn´t wanted to). THAN they gone to war and took some territories from the Paraguayans.

The President you are refering to was the caudillo and tyrant Jose Manuel de Rosas who was deposed by Justo José de Urquiza in 1852 aided by both Brazil and Uruguay. Rosas infact harboured desires in annexing not only Paraguay but also Uruguay as well as reclaiming the Falkland islands from England. Urquiza would later be overthrown by Bartolomé Mitre. Urquiza returned to be Governor of his home province of Entre Rios and eventially was assasinated. The Paraguayan war I was referring to is better known as the war of the triple alliance. This was an alliance between Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay headed by President Bartolomé Mitre which started in 1865 when Paraguay invaded Brazil. The reasons why Argentina entered the war was to help depose the Paraguayan Dictator Francisco Solano López while in the process taking Paraguayan territory.
