do you think aliens from other civillizations (if any out there!) will have humanoid builds as in a nose, forward projecting eyes and two arms and two legs.
I was thinking, they could even be made of liquid or be invisible, or of some substance that doesnt exist on our planet. They could have evolved completely differently and resebemble insects? Do you get what I mean? As in their species could have completely evolved into a species that appears completeley and utterly different that humanity could ever have imagined!

It all depends on under what conditions these intelligent life forms develop. Sci-fi books have great variety. Everything from fairly humanoid creatures to intelligent being made up of sheer energy and inhabit stars (don't remember from which book that was). In our universe, certain laws of physics can't be ignored and these will most likely steer development of beings in some direction. But who knows about parallell universes and other dimensions and whatnot! I believe the astronomer and writer Carl Sagan said something like this: "The more we search in space for signs of life and not find any, the more we realize how precious life on Earth is." Something like that, it's not an exact quote. Makes you think, doesn't it.

I think we give them humanoid shapes because we have difficulties envisioning intelligent life otherwise.

Reminds me of Star Trek and why every single alien there is humanoid. Something about some ancient humanoid DNA that was spread throughout the universe which is why all intelligent life forms look like humans.

You kidding? And I who thought you pasted that bit from Scientific American. I like a lot the dignified cubes though, even if the gray bimbos would look better on films. However we always think of symmetric beings. Animals are all symmetric. But not all living beings are, plants are not. Would aliens be symmetric?

Intelligent squids roaming Earth's oceans and lands, after millions of years of mutations, constitute a hypothesis regarded as valid by futurologists and biologists (has anyone seen the fantastic documentary "The future is wild"?). Who knows if this is not already the case on other planets?

After the planet was scanned for life, and if the life looked anything like the above or considered hostile, I would order an orbit bombarment. Then would march on to the Planet with 4 entire legions of highly trained and heavily armed and armored Attack Troops. With 2 divisions of tanks and other armored vehicles ,supported by Fighter bombers and exterminate any remaining alien lifeforms and repopulate the planet with colonies of Humans. If the planet cannot be taken by force, order a payload of 500 nukes dropped.
I would thus be Forming the first Galactic Roman Empire....

if you read Von Daniken, Denis Saurat, etc. you will find out that alien came already in earth and that they were described intensively in such precise accounts that we call naively "mythology." aliens are the geants, gods, etc.

Bryce that documentary and the Alien planet one were both long on speculation and very short on science that hypothesis is based on nothing more then current intelligence of squids and someone imagination.
Symetric life makes allot more sense because it offers an easier devolpment plan for large mobile creatures Nock.
