I think it’s fair to say that the Portuguese reflect what the recent polls show in Europe regarding Turkey and its membership in the E.U., which is a definite “NO” thanks.
My Portuguese is not too keen, but check out the banner on the first photo.
Turkey = Terrorism+ Immigration + Drugs
Basically, they are saying letting in the Turks only brings in the filth.
LOL ;D

Oh well, the Turkish will probably come in the EU sooner or later. I think the EU will probably try to get some more of the non-Muslim nations in, before they admit Turkey. Turkey will probably join in about 10 years i think.
I don't think Portugal's opinion matters as much as the larger EU states. I'm sure Germany will have the biggest opinion about Turkey in the EU.

Stupid thread. those poeple marching are pathetic and i would bet my bottom dollar known of them VOTE
those people are neo nazis and sympathizers not patriots of Portugal or Iberia.If they were truly concerned about Turkey then they would be more constructive than march with flags and cheaply made signs.
Its not about showing up to march its about information and politics.

I think it matters. As far as I know, one country can block any enlargement process. Anyway, France and Germany don't seem to be overjoyed at Turkey taking the leading role in EU (they will have the biggest population). Poland may also block Turkey's entry because we want to see Ukraine and Belaruss in the EU as fast as it is only possible. Ukraine will start it's negotiations no sooner than in two year's time and Belaruss is not even democratic right now. yeah i basically agree with u all the way there mate. Portugal can make a difference, since it depends on all countries agreeing. although i don't know if the people of portugal have much say (unless they have to have a referendum), i don't remember us brits being given a choice on whether any of the 10 new EU ascension countries could join (the ones that are in now), even when Portugal, Spain, and Greece joined i don't believe we had a vote. most of it is done in parliament. which to some extent i think is the best way, since most of the public are clueless. so all in all it boils down to the most influential members (which is usually France, Germany, UK), i'm sure they cut deals with the smaller EU nations to get their way. but basically I don't think Germany, or France are too keen with Turkey joining, some of it to do with power, but also the fact that Germany already has a large Turkish population. I think the UK is keen to expand the EU, and get Turkey in, since we don't like the Franco-German power alliance, and I think American interests favor Turkey's entry. sometimes the UK functions as medium for America getting it's influence in the EU.

hehe let the europeans get so old until they have no social security system and let them harvest islamic terrorism on their soil. turkey is a flightless bird. it doesnt belong in europe, coz we is asian innit, and also coz the europeans have always been sore about the turks.. i mean they used to pray to god to spare them from invading huns, avars and such... the germanic people were pressured westwards by the turkic peoples... even the word ogre comes from uygur. The EU sucks anyway. u cant have a serious political organzation with a country like France as one of the leaders.

Not that I'm pro-Turkey in the E.U., but this people in the pictures are not representatives of the Portuguese in general, they're neonazis. Along with this, they also believe the Holocaust didn't happen and so on. Please post some people of ordinary people if you want, not talk show freaks.

How do you know that they are nazis? Is it some flag you noticed? How can you tell? I'm not informed about what is happening in Portugal, so I don't know about any protest or whatnot, so any clarification would be appreciated...
Anyway, they have a right to express their opinion whatever it may be...

W.A.U Stands for Women for Aryan Unity. I think their banner in the 2nd picture is quite telling. But if you don't recognize White Power iconography when you see it, all it takes is a bit of googling... from W.A.U homepagewww.crusader.net/texts/wau/wau1.htmlAnyway, they have a right to express their opinion whatever it may be... Still willing to defend your standpoint?
